Energy Masterclass 2009

Applications are sought from students to attend a three day Masterclass on the technology challenges associated with energy supply and demand for the next century. The programme of speakers includes many distinguished leaders in technology within government and industry, including the Chief Scientist to BP, Prof Steve Koonin, senior technologists and executives from Schlumberger, BP, BHP Billiton, and also leading academics. Participants in the course will have the opportunity to meet and discuss technology challenges with these speakers.

The Masterclass promises to be a timely opportunity to learn about the future of energy, and will not only include presentations about some of the technology challenges associated with the primary sources of energy including Oil, Gas, Nuclear and Coal, but also presentations about renewable energy sources including Geothermal, Solar, Wind, Wave and Biomass, and the emerging technology of CO₂ sequestration. On the demand side, we have speakers who will discuss challenges in the automotive and air transport industry, as well as experts who work on energy demand in buildings and heavy industry. In addition, there will be some discussion about the environmental challenges of energy supply and consumption, as well as a review of the geopolitical constraints and potential impact on the economy of adopting different energy policies.

Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided during the Masterclass and students accepted on the course will be offered a small bursary to help cover the costs of their accommodation in college. In addition, there will be a Masterclass dinner to which all participants are invited.
